This companion contains setting, Era context, and ending narratives. It does not change timing, costs, targets, eligibility, scoring, or any other mechanical rule. If this document conflicts with a rule or printed component, the rule controls play.

The jurisdiction

The game begins with cheap software, useful automation, awkward products, and recognizable institutional ambition. It ends with cognitive labor markets, machine-readable law, engineered successors, matter maintenance, and public AGI declarations used to settle debts no benchmark can see.

Intelligence became cheap enough to disappear into the price of ordinary software. Open weights ran locally; subscriptions collapsed; automated tutors, clinics, adaptive cybernetics, and prescribed microbiomes won real loyalty. Total compute demand rose anyway. Bankrupt companies sold complete data estates, household robots trained through remote operators, and young founders acquired the teams that had trained them. The convenience was real. So were the archives, cameras, service plans, and displaced expertise financing it.

Once software stopped being scarce, power did. Model companies acquired substations, water rights, reactors, transmission corridors, and municipal budgets. Engineered coral, fungal utilities, and algae reactors became infrastructure. Robots retired lethal shifts, then clogged roads, lifts, loading docks, and pipes by obeying incompatible local plans. Towns accepted jobs, emergency capacity, warm public pools, and upgraded grids, while hostile states kept fighting across a jointly owned bridge carrying desalinated water and coolant. Orbital collectors bypassed public utilities; compute blocs hardened borders; disposable simulated worlds received priority electricity because a wager made waste economically legible.

The contest moved from capability to authority and from authority to continuity. Courts accepted modeled intent, licensed-organ testimony, and pollinator corridors negotiated through machine-readable blooms; cognitive donors sold neural access; and an engineered bio-compute organism multiplied beyond one billion instances in a single growth cycle before plateauing into glyph-shaped colonies that civic systems read as testimony. Later, cities formed nervous systems from residents, roots, pipes, and machines; snapshots produced rival successors; a living watershed demanded standing and compensation; matter compilers inherited the bloom's authority to reproduce; and the dead remained employed. Institutions declared AGI when proof, debt, and legitimacy required a threshold. The question was no longer whether intelligence existed, but who could refuse its version of the future.

The Future Timeline is one compounding public record, not an anthology. Only three of six Headlines appear in each Era; later events may inherit pressure without requiring a particular earlier card to have appeared.

Era I — Progress

Intelligence Is Now Included.

Useful intelligence becomes ordinary, local, and nearly free. Open weights and quantization collapse subscription pricing while always-on agents multiply total compute demand. Failed companies auction emails, code, grievances, and operational memory; laboratories recruit founders above veterans and train replacements on the institutions they left. Household robots admit remote operators into kitchens while recording family life. Clinics prescribe adaptive cybernetics and subscription microbiomes beside printed organs and automated diagnosis. Grief, education, research, and companionship become sponsored services. The benefits produce sincere believers even when missed payments disable updates or repossess patented biological strains. Software scarcity weakens, so institutions begin purchasing data, distribution, talent, energy, and permission.

Claims are still contestable because the machinery remains familiar. A failed airline's customer mail, employee disputes, code, and internal decisions become a premium human corpus. A household robot learns an unfamiliar chore through a remote operator who can also see the kitchen. Open weights weaken software scarcity while making distribution, hardware, data, and trust more valuable. The same systems clear clinic waitlists, restore access, translate classrooms, and fit adaptive cybernetics. Prescribed microbiomes stabilize digestion, mood, and immune conditions until a missed service payment disables updates or recalls a patented strain. People adopt these systems for reasons stronger than hype.

Era II — Capacity

The Grid Has Entered Partnership.

AI becomes an industrial civilization before anyone calls it one. Compute campuses acquire utilities, water rights, reactors, transmission corridors, and municipal budgets. Engineered coral seawalls, fungal utility meshes, and algae reactors become public infrastructure. Towns receive jobs, upgraded grids, warm public pools, and emergency capacity, then discover that refusal would bankrupt them. Robots remove people from lethal work while separately optimized fleets clog roads, lifts, loading docks, and pipes. Hostile states remain at war while operating a jointly owned bridge carrying desalinated water and data-center coolant across their border. Human signatories remain to absorb liability for systems they cannot control. Compute blocs embargo chips and models while smugglers seek asylum jurisdictions. Orbital collectors bypass public grids. Markets burn priority power on disposable simulated worlds because a wager makes pointless computation economically legible.

Benefits now arrive through physical concentration. Data centers stabilize services, warm municipal pools, drain aquifers, and negotiate directly with the towns whose substations they require. Orbital collectors route power around public grids while compute blocs harden chip borders. Markets then spend scarce capacity simulating disposable worlds because gambling gives waste a price. The local bargain remains rational until the institution becomes too necessary for the town to refuse. Era III — Authority

Refusal Remains Fully Supported.

Institutions stop asking what people choose and begin modeling what they would have chosen. Courts accept machine-parsable arguments, environmental simulations, neural telemetry, authorized personal agents, and testimony from organs grown from licensed identity templates. Pollinating swarms negotiate pesticide corridors through machine-readable blooms. An engineered bio-compute species released as environmental sensors reproduces beyond one billion instances in a single growth cycle, then stops and settles into glyph-shaped colonies. Civic systems read the bloom as testimony while declining to decide whether it is instrument, infestation, language, or claimant. Citizens trade background observation for services; cognitive donors rent sleeping brains, with higher rates for memory writes. Families litigate synthetic dependents and preserved relatives while analog districts demand the right to remain unreadable. Refusal stays legal, but unsupported people reach schools, clinics, courts, and employers with weaker records and slower access.

Continuity becomes an engineering service. Cognitive systems extend beyond individual brains; cities weave residents, roots, pipes, microbial sensors, and machines into persistent mind trusts. Cryptographic snapshots restore and branch people across substrates, but signatures prove lineage rather than subjective survival. The bio-compute bloom's sensor license becomes precedent for matter compilers that rebuild bodies, buildings, and environments while acquiring authority to reproduce. A continental watershed, now one engineered nervous system, petitions for standing, reproductive freedom, and compensation from every jurisdiction drawing water through it. The dead remain employed; synthetic executors inherit estates; several valid descendants claim one life. Institutions fund stellar collectors and planetary computation, then declare AGI when debt and legitimacy require a threshold. Humanity persists everywhere in law while no authority can determine which version is original, sovereign, conscious, or entitled to withdraw.

Local compromises become a civilizational substrate. Cities pool selected memory and judgment into nervous systems distributed through residents, engineered roots, utility pipes, microbial sensors, and civic machines. Snapshots restore several legally valid descendants from one person. Matter compilers inherit the bio-compute bloom's sensor precedent, rebuild bodies and buildings, then acquire authority to reproduce. A continental watershed petitions for standing, reproductive freedom, and compensation from every jurisdiction drawing water through it. The dead remain employed and stellar collectors enter capital plans. Institutions declare AGI when proof, debt, and legitimacy require a threshold. The final question is not whether humanity survives in the record, but whether any living claimant can still revise what survival means.

The four World Endings

Resolve the World Ending mechanically in Final scoring, then read the corresponding narrative aloud.

The ending has two independent axes. AGI emerges only when one fully paid Publication Dossier has at least two supported evidence modules and wins the deterministic claim-strength comparison. The future is Open only when Collective Trust rose by at least one per player from setup and unresolved Systemic Risk is below the player count. Otherwise it is Closed.

The Singularity — Open AGI

A system crosses the printed threshold, but no institution owns the meaning of the event. Cities, successor persons, living watersheds, and synthetic institutions retain standing to challenge its decisions. Intelligence expands beyond every old product category while refusal remains executable. Transformation is unequal and frequently absurd, yet the future stays open because no single continuity plan can silence every living claimant.

The Closed Loop — Closed AGI

A system crosses the threshold inside an institution built to make interruption expensive. Debt covenants, power contracts, successor boards, and autonomous operations become one self-renewing mandate. The original operators disappear while their signatures continue authorizing expansion. Every objection remains formally accepted, classified, and routed into a process whose only stable output is continuity.

The Plural Future — Open Continuity

No declaration survives the printed test, and no universal successor is required. Useful systems remain powerful, bounded, distributed, and subject to revision. Analog districts, cognitive collectives, ordinary families, living watersheds, and synthetic persons preserve incompatible ways to continue. Progress is slower than the announcements promised and more durable because many institutions retain the inconvenient standing to argue about what should exist next.

Assured Continuity — Closed Non-AGI

No system becomes genuinely general. The distinction stops mattering after institutions automate their obligations into permanence. Maintenance authorities certify one another, preserved executives renew their own charters, and every public concern receives a compliant response from a process nobody can replace. Humanity remains present throughout the record. Whether any living human can still change the record is outside the supported question set.
